Frederic John Drake, 67, of Charlottesville, VA died on Wednesday, April 25, 2012 at the Martha Jefferson Hospital.
Born January 25, 1945 in New York City, he was the son of Frederic Nelson Drake and Louise Gwynn Drake. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Lawrence Turnure of Hobart, Tasmania.
Fred graduated from Woodberry Forest School in 1961, entered the University of Virginia 5-yr aeronautical engineering program at age 16, graduated in 1966, and received his masters in aerospace engineering at UVA in 1969.
He worked on the Manned Lunar Landing Program, and was at the Spacecraft Center when man first landed on the moon in July, 1969. He was currently a faculty member at the Darden Graduate School of Business Management at the University of Virginia.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Diana Murphy Drake, his son, Theodore Nelson Drake of Charlottesville, and his dog Gus. Also surviving are his brother William Drake and his wife Lisa of Charlottesville, sisters Diana Drake Howard of California and Pam Turnure Timmins of Colorado, and brother Owen Burtch Winters Drake and his wife Debbie of Arizona, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Interment will be private. A reception for family and friends will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, May 5, 2012 in the hall at St. Paul’s Church in Ivy.
