Dorothy Burruss Anthony, 92, of Danbury, Connecticut, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 31, 2012, at Bethel Health Care. Born on May 22, 1920 in Free Union, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Virginia Wood Burruss and Willie Warren Burruss. Mrs. Anthony was a Registered Nurse, having graduated from the University of Virginia, School of Nursing. She started her nursing career in 1944 at McGuire Hospital, tending to the needs of veterans injured during World War II. A devoted mother and wife, she dedicated 21 years to being a homemaker, and the family moved to Wilton, Connecticut in 1955. When her daughter graduated from college in 1972, Mrs. Anthony returned to nursing, working at Greenwood Convalescent Home in Hartford, CT, and served as the school nurse at Kent School, a private boarding school in Kent, Connecticut. Early in her adult life, Mrs. Anthony developed an interest in art and continued to paint after she retired from nursing. Although she lived in the North practically her entire adult life, Mrs. Anthony never lost her Southern accent. Survivors include her daughter, Jacqueline Ruth Millan and her husband B. Douglas Millan, Jr.; a granddaughter Melissa Virginia Millan; five sisters, Sue Gordon, Ruby Gallalee, Jean Hoover and her husband Robert, Joyce Walton and her husband Forrest, Nancy Snow and her husband Floyd; four brothers, Randolph Burruss and his wife Bobbie, Joseph Burruss, Thomas Burruss and his wife Margaret, Lawrence Burruss and his wife Joanne. She was predeceased by two brothers and two sisters. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, June 6, 2012 at Hill and Wood Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Al Horton officiating. Interment followed at Monticello Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to University of Virginia School of Nursing, P.O. Box. 801015, Charlottesville, VA 22908.
