Eleanor Norford Proffit Osborne

Eleanor Norford Proffit Osborne, born January 15, 1920 at Stony Point, Virginia, peacefully passed into the Lord’s hands on Thursday, May 23, 2013 at The Laurels of Charlottesville. She was the daughter of the late Lonnie Myrle Norford and Carrie Powell Norford. She was also preceded in death by two husbands, Oscar L. Proffit, Jr. and Thomas R.Osborne; a son, R.M. “Sonny” Norford and a daughter, Shirley Faye Durham; two brothers, William “Buck” Norford and Lonnie Hugh Norford, and a sister Bobbie Ballard Mahanes.

She is survived by a son, D. Wayne Proffit and his wife Frances, of Keene, Virginia. Frances and Eleanor shared a special bond with each other. Other survivors include her brother W. R. Norford and his wife Elsie, a special grandson whom she raised from infancy, Richard Daryl Durham and his fiancée Kris of Ruckersville, grandchildren Shirley Cromer, Kim Hicks, Louise Viar, Pam Proffit Henkel and her husband Robbie, Lisa Norford, Brian Norford, Michael Norford and April Norford; and seven great-grandchildren, two step great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.

Eleanor was the life of any party and a stranger to no one. She loved to dance, travel and enjoyed family gatherings. She was known as “Mama” to many, as well as “Aunt Dick”.

She was a member of Cherry Avenue Christian Church and Preddy’s Creek Baptist Church. She was a past member of both the Charlottesville Doe Club and the Charlottesville WOTM #731, where she served as a past Senior Regent.

She retired from Glassner Jewelers after over 40 years of service; she once said she had probably sold diamonds to over half the men and women in Charlottesville.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff at The Laurels of Charlottesville for their special attention during Mom’s last years. Special thanks to the staff and to Dr. Mary Evans, as they stood by her bed and sang comforting hymns at the time of her passing into the Lord’s hands.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00pm on Wednesday, May 29, 2013 at Cherry Avenue Christian Church with Scott Carter and Stan Martin officiating. Interment will follow at Grace Episcopal Church Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Cherry Avenue Christian Church on Tuesday evening from 6:00 until 8:00.
